Alcohol

Don’t drink until you are old enough - this is the law!! (boring I know but has to be said!!)

When you are old enough be sensible.  No more than one or two alcoholic drinks a day will be fine for most people.

If you take warfarin the best advice is don't drink. Alcohol reacts with warfarin.  If you are going to ignore this advice then don’t drink more than one or two drinks a day.

What ever you do don’t binge drink!!!

Why?

Because:-

  • It will put a strain on your liver
  • You may vomit and therefore not absorb your medication properly
  • Your heart has to work harder
  • You are more at risk of palpitations
  • You may find yourself in danger and incapable of letting people know that you have a congenital heart problem.  This can have serious consequences.
  • If you injure yourself whilst drunk you may not be capable of telling people that you take warfarin - this could have serious consequences if you need hospital treatment
