Are there special arrangements for young girls who happen to have a heart problem? What are they?
If your heart problem is simple – you will probably deliver your baby in your local hospital. You will still need a special baby scan at 20 weeks to look at the baby’s heart.
If your heart problem is quite complex but stable you will need to be seen at a specialist joint clinic with a heart specialist and a mother and baby Consultant who is experienced in looking after pregnant ladies with a heart problem. It may be appropriate for you to have shared care with your local hospital. They will discuss with you where you should deliver your baby.
If you have a very complex heart problem you will need to be seen several times by the specialist team at Manchester Royal Infirmary. You will deliver your baby at Manchester Royal Infirmary because they have a specialist team of doctors and nurses to look after both you and your baby. This includes specialist anaesthetic staff, pain relief and heart specialists for you and your baby etc
