How will a baby be affected if its Mum or Dad has a heart problem they have grown up with?
- Anyone has a small risk of having a baby with a heart problem. The risk is thought to be just under 1 %
- If the Mum or Dad has a heart problem then the risk increases slightly to 3.5 - 5% (slightly lower if the Dad has the heart problem)
- If both Mum and Dad have a heart problem then the risk is increased slightly but is not thought to be much more than 5 %
Remember the chances are that if you have a baby it will not have a heart problem. If your baby does have a heart problem it is not possible to say whether it will have a simple problem or a very complex problem.
