The flight

Most people with a congenital heart problem can fly  anywhere in the world if they want to.

If you are waiting for a procedure for your heart or an operation then the cardiac team looking after you may advise to wait until this is done - check first.

If you have a heart problem where your lips and nails look a little blue then you may be advised to have extra oxygen during the flight especially if you are considering going on a long haul flight.  Ask your nurse whether this applies to you.

If oxygen is required you will have to contact the airline you are flying with and let them know that you will need oxygen.  They will charge you for this - so be prepared!  They may also ask you for a  'fit to fly' letter from your heart doctor.  This is quite easy to arrange just ask your nurse.

During the flight

Drink plenty of fluids - preferably water

Don't drink alcohol during the flight

Try not to just sit down for the whole flight - get up and walk occasionally - even if its just to go to the loo!!
