What if I am on warfarin?
Going on holiday whilst you are on warfarin does not have to be a problem. You just need to remember a few important things:-
1. Negotiate with your INR clinic about when you should have your INR checked prior to and after your holiday.
2. Remember to tell them if you have had to have any immunisations prior to your travel as they may affect your INR level.
3. Make sure that you know what your target INR range is in case you need to tell someone whilst you are away.
4. Take your yellow anticoagulation book with you in case you are unwell or find yourself in hospital for some reason whilst you are travelling.
5. Make sure that you take a contact number for your INR clinic and/or your heart nurse so that you can ring someone for advice if you are unsure what to do.
What if I have a Coaguchek Machine?
Make sure that you:-
1. Take care of the machine. Always carry it in the bag that it comes supplied with.
2. The machine does not work very well in extremes of temperature.
3. You will need to keep your test strips cold - therefore you will need access to a fridge in order to store them on holiday.
4. To keep your strips cold whilst you are travelling try popping them in an empty thermos flask for the journey.
