Who can I speak to about getting pregnant?

Remember it’s never too early to talk through these issues.  Please be assured that everything you tell us and everything that happens to you will be kept very private.  The doctors and nurses are always willing to talk through any of these issues with you - so try not to be embarrassed.

It is especially important if you are on certain types of medicines like warfarin, enalapril and many others.  The doctors may need to adjust or change some of your medicines so that it is safe for both  you and your unborn baby.

Try and talk things through with your parents – it is a grown up thing to do and a very sensible one.  Your parents will probably surprise you and be of great help and support!

Your heart team

They will be able to tell you what your heart is like at the moment and how it would cope with a pregnancy.  They will be able to advise you to go ahead with your plans or to wait until you have had some sort of treatment to help your heart cope better.

Your GP or family planning clinic

They will be able to talk through all the general stuff that any young person needs to know.

The Obstetric Team

This is the team of doctors and midwives who look after pregnant women and their newborn babies.  You should really see a team that specialises in helping young girls who are pregnant but have a heart problem as well.  If you are not sure just ask.

Your Nurse Specialist

They will always be willing to have a chat to you about getting pregnant and will be able to help you get the information and help that you need.

Specialist ‘Heart’ midwife.

Some centres are very lucky to have a midwife who specialises in looking after pregnant ladies who have a heart problem as well.  She will be able to answer loads of your questions and offer you help and support throughout your pregnancy.
