Will I be able to have babies when I'm old enough?
The answer is probably yes. Most ladies with a congenital heart problem can have a baby – you will most probably need a lot of careful looking after in a maternity hospital that is used to dealing with these sorts of heart problems. It is really important that you don’t have a baby by mistake!! If you would like to have a baby when you are old enough then it is a really good idea to talk your plans through with your nurse and doctor beforehand. They will ensure that your heart is in the best possible shape so that it is able to cope with the extra demands of having a baby. They will need to look at all your medicines and make sure that they are safe to take when you are having a baby.
If you have high blood pressure in your lungs then your doctor may advise you not to have a baby. If this is the case make sure you understand the reasons why and take your time and make sure all your questions are answered.
