Younger GUCH patients National Patient Conference, Manchester 9th and 10th October 2010
We know that being a younger patient can mean that you have different concerns and different things you want to talk about than some of our more mature members. Times can be tough enough growing up what with school, exams, university, finding out who you are and what you want out of life – then throw in a heart condition into the mix and all sorts of other issues can come up. We understand this, and we also understand that accessing support and information about your heart condition early on can really help you get a handle on things better. There are loads of other younger patients like you all around the country with all kinds of heart conditions, and this year at our National patient Conference, we want to bring everyone together.
We will have a fantastic programme of activities, including fun workshops, discussion time and more, and the aim is to address issues to do with your health and how you feel about your condition, in a friendly, informal and fun way.
This exclusive programme is only open to younger patients aged upto 24 years.
(Parents are welcome to join in the programme of activities in the other conference)

Are you 15 to 23 years old?
Are you living with a long-term health condition?
Do you spend lots of your time at the Doctors or Hospital?
Do you get nagged by adults, friends and parents about what you should and shouldn’t do? (they mean well but it can be hard to deal with!)
Staying Positive is a great new project for young people just like you!
We run workshops for young people aged 12-18 and we need your help!
What’s it all about?
- Having fun and meeting new people!
- We asked lots of young people and they told us what was important and we built the workshops around their ideas- medication, school, feeling down, talking to Doctors and parents, exercise, sex and alcohol and drugs and puberty for younger people
Why should I get involved?
- Make friends who have similar experiences to you!
- Get trained up to deliver workshops and use your experiences to help other young people
- Get paid for your time! (we pay £40 per workshop once you have been trained and delivered one set of workshops)

Speak Up is the BHF's fun, one day workshop for young people aged between 13 and 19 who are living with heart conditions.
At Speak Up you will learn more about:
- How to feel more confident
- How to communicate with others
- How to talk to others about your condition in a supportive and creative way
You will also meet other young people with heart conditions.
The Speak Up workshop is completely free. We will also pay for you to travel to and from the workshop.
"I think the workshop taught me that you need to talk to people, tell them about your heart condition - otherwise you're not being fair on them and you can't expect them to understand…"

Time: 10am – 3pm (includes lunch)
- 17 April - Leeds
- 22 May - London
- 26 June - Bristol
- 11 September - Newcastle

It is a fun and relaxed workshop – you won’t have to do any tests or give any presentations.
If you would like to learn more about how to express yourself and build your confidence, all you have to do is fill out this form and post it back to the BHF.
