Going to University

Wow how exciting is this!!

You may need to give your parents some slack as they are probably having sleepless nights worrying that you won’t be able to look after yourself!

Prove them wrong by –

  • learning all about your heart problem

  • Understand what medicines you are on and how to take them

  • Have a fantastic time! But be sensible and don’t binge drink as this could be dangerous

  • Sort out a local GP quickly (Most universities have a GP service on campus)

  • Ask your nurse for a detailed letter to be sent to your new GP
If you are on warfarin think about how you will manage this when you are at uni and when you visit home etc – you may need to ask your nurse to help with this
We can often put you in touch with the nearest Adult Congenital Heart Centre to your University.  We may be able to give you direct contact details for the specialist nurses - this will mean that you can contact someone locally for help and advice whilst you are at University
Keep a copy of your most up to date clinic letter and ECG.  If you need to contact the local ACHD team in an emergency - you will have some information to give them about your heart problem
